Hurting Right Now? Start Here
Throbbing toothache. Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently in case food is caught there. An over-the-counter pain reliever, taken as the label directs, can take the edge off. Then call us.
Swelling in your face or jaw. Hold a cold pack on the outside of your cheek. Swelling is often a sign of infection, so call us the same day rather than waiting it out.
Cracked or broken tooth. Keep any pieces you can find, rinse with warm water, and chew on the other side until we see you.
Knocked-out tooth. Handle it by the chewing surface, never the root, and don’t scrub it clean. Keep it wet in a little milk or tucked inside your cheek, and call us right away. Getting here quickly gives the tooth its best chance.
Lost filling or crown. Save the crown if you have it and bring it along. Then give us a call.
Head to the ER first if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won’t slow down, a possible broken jaw, or a fever with swelling that keeps spreading.
Dental Emergencies We Treat
You don’t have to decide whether your problem “counts” before you call. If something hurts or broke, let us take a look. We help with:
- Toothaches and sharp or throbbing pain
- Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
- Infections, abscesses, and swelling
- Lost fillings and crowns
- Knocked-out or loose teeth
- Teeth that need root canal therapy or need to come out
What Happens When You Call
Someone on our team will ask what happened, where it hurts, and whether anything is swollen or bleeding. Then we’ll find the soonest time we can see you.
When you get here, Dr. Jeremy Hardy will look at the area, take any X-rays he needs, and focus first on getting you comfortable. Patients often describe him as calm and laid-back, which helps when you’re hurting and on edge. If the dentist makes you nervous, tell us; we offer nitrous oxide to help you relax.
Once you’re comfortable, he’ll explain what he sees in plain language and walk you through your options. “Most people don’t really care to hear the details of whatever procedure they need,” Dr. Hardy says, “but everyone wants to be heard and made to feel valued.” Sometimes we can fix the problem at that first visit. Other times the first step is relieving the pain, and the full repair takes another appointment. Either way, he’ll be honest with you, and you decide what makes sense.
Cost and Insurance for Emergency Visits
Your visit starts with an exam and any X-rays you need, and we’ll talk through costs with you before treatment begins. We work with many insurance plans, so call and we’ll check yours.
No insurance? Ask about our VIP Membership Plan. We also offer Sunbit, which lets you split your bill into monthly payments with no hard credit check.
Emergency Dental FAQs
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment in Chickasaw?
Call North Bay Dental at (251) 456-8406 as early in the day as you can. We’ll do our best to see you that day, and if the schedule is full, we’ll get you in at the soonest time available.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency when the office is closed?
We’re open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If a problem starts in the evening or on a weekend, follow the first-aid steps on this page and call us as soon as we open. For trouble breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won’t slow down, or swelling that keeps spreading with a fever, go to the nearest ER.
Should I go to the ER or the dentist for a toothache?
Go to the ER for breathing or swallowing problems, heavy bleeding, a possible broken jaw, or a fever with spreading swelling. For most toothaches, broken teeth, and dental infections, an ER can manage the pain or prescribe medication, but a dentist is the one who can treat the tooth itself.
Can my tooth be saved, or will it need to come out?
It depends on how much healthy tooth is left and whether there’s infection. We offer both root canal therapy and tooth extractions. Dr. Hardy will show you what he sees, explain your options, and help you choose what makes sense for you.
I’ve put off the dentist for a long time. Will you judge me?
No. Plenty of people wait until something hurts. “We are here to listen without judgment and find options that work for your unique situation,” Dr. Hardy says. If you’re nervous, let us know, and ask about nitrous oxide to help you relax.
